After introductions by the CAC members, Kathleen Anglo, City of St. Paul Project Manager, gave a project overview. This overview included the roles and expectations, the meeting process, and future meeting schedule. Members of the Project Team were introduced by Wayne Houle from SEH. Other topics included St. Paul's 8-80 Vitality Initiative, Project goals and objectives, the historical vision for the Grand Round, and the St. Paul Bike Plan. Antonio Rosell from CDG described the team's approach to community engagement.
CAC Conversation about the Grand Round Project
Members of the CAC participated in a facilitated conversation. Detailed responses to the visioning exercise can be found in this document (click to open). (In the spreadsheet use the tabs at the bottom to see the responses to each question.) Highlights are summarized below, including the common themes found in participants' responses.

1. What makes you happy / hopeful / excited about the project?
  • Connectivity with trails, parks, recreation sites, and neighborhoods
  • Bringing people of different ages, neighborhoods, backgrounds, communities together
Primary Theme: The possibility of a more accessible network that will have multiple benefits related to recreational commuting, visual quality, outdoor activity, and connecting the community.

2. From your perspective / your organization’s perspective, what does success look like?
  • Not having to compete with automobiles
  • Loved by community, maintained by city
Primary Themes: Success would mean a complete trail that is safe and inviting to people of all ages and backgrounds because they would not have to compete for space with automobiles or encounter other barriers. The Grand Round should be a destination and a source of pride for the community.

3. What risks / hazards do you perceive? 
  • Not communicating need and importance of project, not reaching enough community members for input
  • Lack of commitment and resources to implement and maintain facilities
Primary Themes: Project has huge potential for collaboration and communication with a diverse group of community members. Risks include issues of commitment to design vision, funding, long-term maintenance and perceived traffic constraints. 

4. What parts / aspects do you think we should spend more time on?
  • Wayfinding
  • Connections to neighborhoods, and community destinations (including food)
Primary Themes: Developing a clear and innovative design that responds to community members’ needs, makes wayfinding simple, and allows for easy navigation of intersections. Connections beyond St. Paul should also be included. 

5. What do you think are the greatest / key opportunities?
  • Improved health and quality of life
  • Economic development
Primary Themes: This project can be transformative in the ways residents and users will access destinations across Saint Paul. Other key opportunities include community health benefits and improved connectivity throughout the city and region.
